Clear Space Productions is now accepting applications for its Musical Theater Summer Intensive program, which will take place from July 5 to 15, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the 9th Grade Campus of Cape Henlopen High School, 820 Savannah Rd. in Lewes. The cost for the two-week program, serving K-12 students, is $250. For an application call (302) 644-3810.
The Musical Theatre Summer Intensive is designed for students who are interested in learning about dance, acting, singing and costume construction, and how those elements are combined to create musical theatre. The objective of the program is to build self-confidence through challenging, but attainable, performing arts activities. The population of the Intensive is divided into six groups that are age and ability related: Elementary School Beginner and Experienced; Middle School Beginner and Experience; High School Beginner and Experienced. Placement occurs based on information supplied on the application and a movement audition on the first day of the Intensive. Approximately 12 students are accepted for each group.
Each student will create costumes and develop movement, vocal parts and acting intentions for four production numbers from the Broadway repertory: two numbers within their group and two numbers that include students from the entire Intensive. The program culminates in two performances of the 14 production numbers on Friday, July 15 at 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. The Musical Theatre Summer Intensive is taught by highly qualified performing artists who are also arts educators. The $250 fee includes all instruction, all materials and tickets to the performance.
The Musical Theatre Summer Intensive was begun by Ken Skrzesz in 1993 to serve students of Howard County, Maryland. Since then, hundreds of students have participated in the program, which remains active in Baltimore County, and now, Sussex County, Delaware. The Musical Theatre Summer Intensive follows the curriculum guidelines of the National Standards for Arts in Education.
