Mearl G. Layton, Sr., 67 of Frankford, Del, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, Oct. 30, 2006 at his home.
Layton was born on Feb. 13, 1939, to the late Samuel L. and Hazel (Quillen) Layton. He was a graduate of Lord Baltimore, Class of 1957. Layton was a lifelong owner, trainer and driver of harness horses, a school bus contractor (Layton Bussing LLC) and a farmer. He enjoyed all aspects of the harness horse business from his early teens. One of his most memorable horses being a 2-year-old filly named Teenie Bopper.
He was an avid fan of the local and college baseball teams that his sons played for and managed over the years. His favorite past time was spending time with his wife and family while traveling around the local region. Layton was also a member of the United States Trotting Association, Standard Bred Owners Association, Farm Bureau of Delaware, and the Indian River School Bus Contractors. He is survived by his loving wife, Helen (McCabe) Layton; three sons, Mearl G. Layton Jr., Travis L. Layton and Samuel L. Layton.
A graveside service was scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006, at 11 a.m. at St. George’s Cemetery in Clarksville, Del.
Flowers will be accepted, or donations can be made in Layton’s name to a charity of the giver’s choice.
