Kathryn E. Sears, 87, of Ocean View, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, surrounded by her family.
In 1960, Sears, as an employee of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co., was the first woman to be promoted to the position of underwriter. She was a past president of the Ladies of the Elks, Lodge #622, in Annapolis and also the Secretaries Association in Annapolis. In retirement, she enjoyed crabbing, boating, canasta and golfing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Myers Lockett; her husbands, James “Knockey” Hughes and Robert C. Sears; and her sister, Mary Ellen Hopkins.
Sears is survived by three daughters, Carol Hughes; Lu Ella Moore and husband Mike; Patty Hammond and husband Jerry; two sons, Bob Sears and wife Mariann; Jim Hughes and wife Susan; grandchildren, Amy Donovan and husband Steve, Megan Hopkins, Michael Hammond, Emily and Julia Hughes; and precious great-granddaughter, Allison Donovan; sister, Marie Roberts of McClain, Miss.; brother, Russell Myers Lockett Jr. of Roswell, N.M.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2007, at 1 p.m., at Melson’s Funeral Chapel, West Avenue, Ocean View.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to St. Matthews By-the-Sea Methodist Church, Fenwick Island, DE 19944.
The family expressed its gratitude to the Beebe Medical Center, Cape Surgical Associates and Green Valley Rehabilitation/Nursing Center for the expert and compassionate care that she received.
