Elizabeth S. “Betty” Madara, 94, of Selbyville, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Berlin Nursing & Rehab Center, Berlin, Md. She wrote for many years for the Delmarva News and Wave newspapers. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Selbyville and had sung in the choir for 40 years. She was a member of the Golden Age Luncheon Group and the Friendship Circle at Salem.
Madara created the idea of the reunion of Selbyville High School’s 1932 through 1969 graduating classes, where she was valedictorian of her 1932 graduating class. She was a member of the Selbyville Community Club, former president of the American Legion Auxiliary in Selbyville, a member of the Degree of Pocahontas Running River 25 in Nassau, Del., and very active in her church and community; she was also responsible for starting the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Selbyville.
Madara was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh A. and Florence Mumford Stephens; and her husband, Joseph L. Madara. She is survived by two daughters, Josephine M. James of Pensacola, Fla. and Mary M. Thorn of Eugene, Ore.; two sons, Kenneth L. Madara and Joseph I. Madara, both of Selbyville; four sisters, Mary Rickards, Almeda Quillen and Florence Bixler, all of Selbyville, and Mildred Kitchens of Bishopville, Md.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were scheduled for Thursday, March 13, 2008, with interment in Redmen’s Cemetery, Selbyville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Redmen’s Cemetery Fund, 69 Cemetery Rd., Selbyville, DE 19975; or your favorite charity.
