Ronald A. Meade, 60

Ronald A. Meade, 60, died suddenly at home on Friday, March 14, 2008. He was a native Delawarean and received his bachelor’s, master’s and administrative degrees from the University of Delaware. In later years, he pursued further educational studies at Wilmington University. He will be remembered mostly for his dedication to working with children as an educator, coach and school principal.

Meade began his teaching career after serving six years in the U.S. Army Reserves. He served as assistant principal at New Castle Middle School and later at Gunning Bedford Middle School. He served as principal of New Castle Middle School until 1993, when he pursued a new career path with the State of Delaware Department of Public Instruction. While there, he started several programs for at-risk children.

After retiring in 2001, he enjoyed sports, traveling, sketching and times spent with his beloved family. He attended and was a member of Newark United Methodist Church, Newark, Del. He enjoyed reading and collecting books, cooking and developing gourmet recipes, and time spent at the Jersey shore. Throughout his life he spent many hours coaching soccer, wrestling and baseball. He was a devoted father and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Priding himself on physical fitness, he enjoyed weightlifting, biking and running. He was an avid gardener who enjoyed the outdoors.

Meade was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen Irene Mead. He is survived by his father, Adrian E. Mead and his wife Alice of Millsboro, Del.; a daughter, Shannon Nicole Meade Oehlers and her husband Michael of Hanover, Pa.; a son, Jonathan Michael Meade and his fiancée Adrienne Holiday of Newark, Del.; a brother, Robert J. Meade and his wife Kay of Milford, Del.; a step-brother, Joe Cloud and his wife Charmane of Smyrna, Del.; a niece, Amanda Meade; and a nephew, Andrew Meade.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 21, 2008, at Newark United Methodist Church, 69 E. Main St., Newark, where friends may call after 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or the Boys and Girls Clubs of Delaware, 669 S.
