Firefighters respond to blaze
Bethany Beach firefighters and those from numerous other nearby volunteer agencies from Millville and Selbyville to Rehoboth and Ocean City, Md., responded on Friday night, March 21, to a house fire at 17 Heather Lane in North Bethany.
Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company (BBVFC) Chief Tom Moore arrived on the scene first after receiving notification of the reported fire at 7:52 p.m. Friday and confirmed that a fire was in progress at the three-story elevated home. The fire had apparently started in a utility room and set off smoke detectors inside the home, notifying the home owner, who then attempted to put out the fire.
More than 100 firefighters were sent to the scene before they brought the blaze under control. The home sustained damage estimated at $500,000. No official cause for the fire has been released.
