James E. Major Jr., 87, of Dagsboro, Del., formerly of Columbus, N.J., passed away Friday, June 20, 2008, at home. He was a retired major in the United States Marine Corps and a New Jersey school administrator. He was a veteran of World War II and Korea, having served with the 1st, 2nd and 6th Marine Divisions. He was a life member of VFW Post 7234, MOAA, the 1st State Marine Corps League, 1st Marine Division, KWVA, NRA, the Knights of Columbus 11285 and a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bethany Beach, Del. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.
Major is survived by his wife of 35 years, Virginia Major; two daughters, Carol Lynn Major and Sueann M. Bennett, DVM; a brother-in-law, Bruce Post; a sister-in-law, Eileen Esgrow and her husband, Buck; two grandsons, Jamie and Stanley Worrell; and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, 2008, and a graveside service with full military honors was scheduled for Thursday, June 26, 2008, at Calvary Cemetery, 2398 Marlton Pike, Cherry Hill, N. J. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to 1st Marine Division Scholarship Fund, 410 Pier View Way, Oceanside CA 92054; or Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
