Loretta Martin Shackle, 83


Loretta Martin Shackle, 83, of Millville, Del., beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully at her home after a brief illness from pancreatic cancer on Tuesday, July 22, 2008. Her parents emigrated from Austria through Ellis Island, N.Y., in the early 1900’s. She was very proud of her Austrian and Kansan heritage and never forgot it. Upon graduation from high school, she worked as a secretary for various police agencies, courts and corporations in both Kansas City and Topeka, Kan., and during World War II for the Navy Dept. in San Diego, Calif. After the war, she attended Washburn University of Topeka, Kan., and was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority.

She was a wonderful homemaker and was active in the PTA, the Homemaker’s Club, The Civic Association, Women of Trinity Episcopal Church, and was a Sunday School Teacher and Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. She graduated cum laude from Notre Dame College of Maryland in 1980 with a Bachelor’s Degree in the Classics and was a member of Eta Sigma Phi Honorary Classical Society. Upon graduation, she worked as a legal secretary for Wood & Christie Law Firm of Laurel, Md.

Upon retirement, she and her husband moved to Millville in 1990. She graduated from the University of Delaware in 2000 with a Master’s Degree in Liberal Studies. One of her proudest accomplishments was the renovation of the “Eisenhower House” in Laurel, Md. She loved to play piano, read and be at home with her family and dogs. She was a talented writer and wrote a weekly column of the happenings in Savage, Md., for a number of years. She also authored a synthesis for the University of Delaware entitled “My Austrian Heritage”, celebrating the history and gifts that the wave of immigrants in the early part of the last century brought to America. A woman of great faith, she was an active member of St. Martin’s-in-the-Field Episcopal Church until her death and was a member of the Episcopal Church Women.

Shackle was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth Martin; and six brothers and sisters. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Ron Shackle; a daughter, Elizanne and her husband, David, of Del.; a son, Ronald and his wife, Linda, of Ariz.; and many relatives in Austria and Germany. An avid dog lover, she leaves ehind her devoted and constant companions, two Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Jasmine and Bonnie.

A funeral service was scheduled for Monday, July 28, 2008, with interment in the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro, Del. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Martin’s-in-the-Field Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 697, Selbyville, DE 19975; or to the Delaware SPCA/Sussex Chapter, 22918 DuPont Blvd., Georgetown, DE 19947.
