Richard ‘Dick’ Nelson Rollings, 81
Richard “Dick” Nelson Rollings, 81, of Dagsboro, Del., formerly of Baltimore, Md., passed away peacefully Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at his home. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as aircrewman on PBY’s. His distinguished qualities earned him designation as Honor Man of his Combat Aircrewman Training Unit. He retired in 1978 from Prince George’s County as chief construction engineer.
Rollings received his 50-year Mason pin in a ceremony held in November 2007, at the Dagsboro Lodge. He was a member of the Maryland State Engineer’s Association, associate member of the VFW Mason Dixon Post 7234 at Quillen’s Point in Ocean View, Del., a member of the Ocean View Presbyterian Church and friend of the Community Lutheran Church. An avid outdoorsman and waterman, he loved watching the local waterfowl from the dock at his home. He also spent his free time making crafts and concrete ornaments.
Rollings was preceded in death by his parents, James Nelson and Elsie (Redmer) Rollings; and a sister, Jean Fountain-Bond. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Eunice (Scheibe) Rollings; two sons, Richard D. Rollings and wife, Kathy, of Glenville, Pa., and Mitchell S. Rollings and wife, Paula, of Oologah, Okla.; two sisters, Carolyn Eavey and husband, Richard, of Southport, N.C., and Suzanne Middleton of Stuart, Fla.; a brother, Douglass Rollings of Panama; and eight grandchildren, Jason, Cody, Elizabeth, Jon and Kathryn Rollings, Emily Zadok, and Joe and Amanda Swaggerty.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at the Ocean View Presbyterian Church, 67 Central Ave., Ocean View, Del. Interment will follow in the adjoining church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to VFW Post 7234, P.O. Box 91, Ocean View, DE 19970; or to a charity of the giver’s choice.
