Harvard J. Gordy, 85

Harvard J. Gordy, 85, of Gumboro, Del., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford, Del., after a brief illness. After receiving his GED, he went on to become a licensed minister and could often be found studying his Bible. He was a founding member of Christ Evangelistic Church in Laurel, Del., where he was a Sunday-school teacher for many years.

Gordy served in the United States Army during World War II, landing in the second wave at Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was a member of the Gideons International, Ruritans and Club 50, a bowling league for those older than 50, and a former member of the Florida Jaycees. He enjoyed working with antiques, going to auctions and refinishing trunks and tables. He also enjoyed studying family history.

Gordy was preceded in death by his parents, J. Dawson and Edith B. Gordy; and his brothers, Oscar W. Gordy and Robert Gordy. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Amelia E. Gordy; a daughter, Sharon Lee Harte and her husband, Benjamin J. Harte Jr., of Gumboro; two granddaughters, Katherine E. Kudzma and her husband, David S., of Gumboro and Marcella Harte Conlon and her husband, J. Patrick, of Bear, Del.; a brother, Elijah F. Gordy; a sister-in-law, Jane Gordy; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at noon at Christ Evangelistic Church, 9802 Camp Road, Laurel, Del., where friends may call one hour prior and Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in Line United Methodist Church Cemetery, Whitesville, Md. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions may be made to Christ Evangelistic Church, 9802 Camp Road, Laurel, DE 19956.
