C. Emily Burton, 93, of Lewes, Del., passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family. She was a homemaker, deeply devoted to her family and friends, and well known for her sense of humor and direct manner. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes for over 50 years, serving as a Sunday-school teacher, member of the choir and member of the altar guild. She was also an avid supporter of the Lewes Senior Center, Lewes Historical Society, Beebe Hospital, Lewes Lions Club and the Lewes Library. An honorary lifetime member of the Lewes Yacht Club, she enjoyed painting, knitting, crocheting, sailing and going to the beach.
Burton was preceded in death by her parents, George Washington and Clara Messick Coverdale; her husband, Perry T. Burton; an infant child; and three sisters, Lillian C. Straw, Marion White and Helena Macintire. She is survived by a son, Leslie L. Burton of Sarasota, Fla.; a daughter, Carol M. Katz of Lewes; two granddaughters, Tracy (Katz) Evans and Blythe Burton-Teed, both of Lewes; a great-granddaughter, Kelsey Evans of Lewes; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service was scheduled for Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, with interment in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Lewes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to St. Peter’s Church Sunday School Program, P.O. Box 464, Lewes, DE 19958.
