Alberta Thorp “Bert” Gurtler, 76, of Millsboro, Del., passed away Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, Del. She was a computer programmer/keypunch operator for the American Hardware Company, retiring after 30 years of service. She was past president of the AARP Long Neck Chapter 4903, director of State Bowling Association, sergeant-at-arms of Lower Delaware Bowling Association and a member of American Legion Post 28. An outgoing and vibrant person, she loved jokes and telling colorful stories.
Gurtler was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Phyllis Rutter Thorp; her husband, Eugene T. Gurtler; a son, Gerald L. Thorp; three brothers, Perry, Irving and David Thorp; and a sister, Louise DiMartini. She is survived by three brothers, John Thorp of Middletown, Pa., James Thorp and his wife, Melody, of Christiana, Del., and William Thorp and his wife, IreneAnn, of Bear, Del.; two sisters, Virginia “Ginny” Keene of Millsboro and Georgeanne Thorp of Newark, Del.; six nieces; 10 nephews; and many special friends and neighbors.
Services were scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, with interment in Carey’s Cemetery, Millsboro.
