Barbara Ann Zimmerman, 70, of Ocean View, Del., passed away Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008. She spent a long career in blood-banking, first training in St. Joseph Hospital in Lancaster, Pa., and later moving to Kingston, N.Y.; Greenville, S.C.; and to the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. She attended Immaculata College, near Philadelphia, Pa., and graduated from University of Maryland. She was a board member of the American Association of Blood Banking and active in community affairs. She retired in 2004 as an executive officer of Biomedical Services at the American Red Cross Headquarters.
A real people-person, she remained very active after retirement by volunteering with her neighborhood association and visiting with her children and grandchildren, often hosting large holiday celebrations at her home. She was a devout Catholic and member of St. Ann’s Parish, Bethany Beach, Del.
Zimmerman was preceded in death by her father, Milton Smith; and her husband, Thomas Eugene Zimmerman. She is survived by her mother, Josephine Elizabeth Smith; three sons, Thomas Eugene of Harrogate, England, Jeffrey Scott Zimmerman of New Windsor, Md., and Michael Harold Zimmerman, also of New Windsor; six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Eric, Billy, Chris, Donald and Thomas; a sister, Lynda Smith Williams of Gonzalez, La.; and two brothers, William Milton Smith Jr. of Lancaster, Pa., and Michael Joseph Smith of St. Petersburg, Fla.
A Memorial Mass was scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, with interment in Lancaster, Pa., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society.
