Betty Lou Calvert Thornberg, 74, of Lewes, Del., passed away Friday, Jan. 2, 2009. She was retired as the secretary to a four-star general at Air Force Headquarters, Andrews Air Force Base. Well-known as an excellent dancer, she loved to dance and was athletic and energetic. She was devoted to her family and her dog, and was lovingly referred to by her family as a “cross between a spark plug and a pit bull.” An excellent planner and organizer, she provided loving guidance to all and will be greatly missed.
Thornberg was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Dorothy Calvert Burkey; and her husband, Edward Franklin Thornberg Jr. She is survived by two sons, Mitchell W. Thornberg and his wife, Robin, of Milton, Del., and Clinton D. Thornberg and his wife, Diane, of Lewes; one daughter, Linda Lee Little and her husband, Don, of Lewes; a sister, Dottie Eye and her husband, Jackie, of Girardville, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Don, Heather, Keith, Diana, Taylor, Loren and Abigail; five great-grandchildren, Gavyn, Corbyn, Ethan, Nashaya and Caroline; a host of nieces, nephews and special friends, including Judy and Ray DiGiovanni; and her beloved canine companion, Winnie.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, Del., where friends and family may call at 1 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Sussex County SPCA, 326 South DuPont Hwy., Georgetown, DE 19947.
