George W. Thomas, 91, of Middletown, Del., passed away peacefully in Renaissance Health Care Center, Millsboro, Del., where he was a resident for the past year. He was formerly a house painting contractor in the Salisbury, Md., area. He and his mother owned and operated the G.W. Thomas’s Antiques and Appraisals Shop near Odessa, Del. He continued to operate the shop for 50 years after his mother’s death. He was a member of the Antique Society and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Middletown. He traveled around the country and Canada giving speeches for Al-Anon and started Al-Ateen in Delaware.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Minnie Thomas; a grandchild, Lisa Taylor; a sister, Hazel Willey; and a brother, Jack Thomas. He is survived by three daughters, Yvonne “Bonnie” Balcerski and her husband, Ed, of Long Neck, Del., Beverly Ann Wilson and her husband, Jimmie, of Delmar, Del., Barbara Taylor and her husband, Seth, of Palm City, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Jude’s the Apostle Catholic Church, 152 Tulip Dr., Lewes, Del., where friends may call after 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963; or the Alzheimer’s Association of Sussex County, P.O. Box 625, Georgetown, DE 19947.
