L. Madeline Mumford, 72, passed away Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at home, surrounded by her family. She lived in North Carolina for 14 years but resided in Delaware the remainder of her life. She was a homemaker, school bus driver and caregiver to many local people.
Mumford was preceded in death by her parents, John Elva and Elsie Timmons Shockley; her husband, Charles Ottie Mumford; three brothers, Forrest, John Elva Jr. and Sylvester; and three sisters, Edna Lewis, Hazel Montgomery Hahn and Elizabeth Oltman. She is survived by her six children, Deborah Hollowell and her husband, Whit, of Richmond Hill, Ga., K. Grant of Fredericksburg, Va.; Aaron K. and his wife, Denise, of Locust Grove, Va., Bruce A. of Millsboro, Del., Agena Atkinson and her husband, Jimmie, also of Millsboro, and Charles O. and his wife, Merissa, of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Jessica Mumford, Alex and Emily Hollowell, and Ella Mumford; two sisters, Ruth Mumford, of Baltimore, Md., and Shirley Nickerson of Deptford, N.J.; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service was scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, with burial in Millsboro Cemetery, Millsboro. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in her memory be made to the Children’s Miracle Network, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of choice.
