Joseph C. McCourt, 80, of Ocean View, Del., formerly of Newtown, Conn., passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, Del. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, he then worked for Union Carbide/First Brands Corporation in Danbury, Conn., retiring in 1997.
McCourt was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and spent his lifetime in civic and church leadership roles. He was active on the executive board of the Savannah’s Landing Home Owner’s Association, serving as past-president and serving most recently as chairman of the architectural board. He was also a lifetime member of VFW Post 7234, Quillen’s Point, Ocean View, and a member of the Marine Corps League.
McCourt was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Marie (Dunne) McCourt. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joan (Regan) McCourt; six children, Kevin J. McCourt of Ocean View, Susan Zemzicki and her husband, John E. Jr., of Toms River, N.J., Joseph P. McCourt and his wife, Jill, of Bethel, Conn., Karen Sheridan and her husband, Bernard, of Tolland, Conn., Mary Saia and her husband, Anthony, of Jamestown, N.C., and Brian McCourt and his wife, Jennifer, of Raleigh, N.C.; 21 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A Mass of Christian burial was scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2009, with interment in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Dagsboro, Del. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the giver’s local hospice.
