Craig Steven Wood, 24, of Frankford, Del., passed away Sunday, May 10, 2009, in The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pa. He suffered from a very rare, seriously debilitating skin condition that required daily medical care, and he had a lifetime of doctors’ visits, surgeries and hospital stays. He had recently moved back into his parent’s home near Clarksville, after living on his own for several years in Lewes, Del.
After being home-schooled for the majority of his school career, he attended Delaware Tech and received multiple Microsoft certifications. He earned money making computer repairs and building Web sites; all while volunteering for the Christian youth organization, Young Life. He attended New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Rehoboth Beach, Del., where he served in their youth ministry. He was an avid public speaker and had the opportunity to travel to many different churches and events in the Mid-Atlantic region where he gave his testimony and exemplified his faith.
He once gave a speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. when he was 15 years old. He had devoted his life to serving God through his church and stories of his faith-filled life impacted even those who never met him. His unwavering faith inspired everyone that came into contact with him; and he continues to affect people’s lives. He never let his disabilities slow him down and loved road trips, skiing, riding ATVs, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
Wood is survived by his parents, Michael and Christine Wood; two brothers, Brandon Wood and his wife, Holly, of Millsboro, and Ryan Wood, at home; a sister, Erin Wood, at home; two step-brothers, Michael Wood of Georgia and Steven Wood and his wife, Melony, of Georgia; his paternal grandparents, Irwin and Jean Wood of Centreville, Md.; maternal grandparents, Robert J. and Patricia Benton of Clarksville, Del.; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services were scheduled for Thursday, May 14, 2009. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 15, at 11 a.m. at St. George’s Cemetery, Clarksville, Del., with a fellowship gathering at the Wood residence afterwards. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the youth ministry of New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 19331 Lighthouse Plaza, Unit 2, Rehoboth, DE 19971.
