Gaylen Richardson Johnson, 84, of Ocean View, Del., formerly of New Castle, Del., passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, May 28, 2009, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, Del. During World War II, she worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” for Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore, Md. Her primary vocation was a homemaker; however, while living in New Castle County, she worked for the Department of Elections. She loved to read, travel and help her loving husband do crossword puzzles.
Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Ida (Woodie) Richardson; her son, Robert E. Johnson; and her sister, Kathleen Hazard. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, C. Elwood Johnson; her daughter, Jo Anna Higgins and her husband, Bob, of Newark; two sons, Philip Johnson of Ocean View, and David Johnson and his wife, Debbie, of Middletown, Del.; Robert’s life partner, Shirley R. Babe, of Claymont, Del.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was scheduled for Monday, June 1, 2009. Interment in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, Del., was private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Assoc., 777 Penn Center Blvd., Suite 200, Pittsburgh, PA 15235.
