Donald J. Doutt, 79, of The Pines of Long Neck, Millsboro, Del., and Clearwater, Fla., passed away Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Mease Countryside Hospital in Florida. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War. He retired from the Department of Transportation in 1991 as a senior right-of-way agent. He served as Commander of American Legion Post 17, DuBois, Pa. Upon moving to Delaware, he became an active member of Newark B.P.O. Elks Lodge #2281, holding the office of Exalted Ruler in 1972-73. He also served as state vice president of the Tri-State Elks Association in 1974.
An ardent Blue Hen football fan for 30 years, he attended all home games before moving to the Long Neck area. He was also a member of the Long Neck U.M. Church and the Indian River Yacht Club.
Doutt was preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Helen Doutt; a sister, Vivian; and a brother, Jack. He is survived by his wife, Anna R. Doutt; two sons, Grant Doutt of Raleigh, N.C., and Dennis J. Doutt of Pinellas Park, Fla.; a stepson, Dennis L. Smith and his wife, Linda, of Newark, Del.; four grandsons, David, Matthew, Dennis Jr. and Nickalus; two sisters, June Wescoat of Reynoldsville, Pa., and Sally Skaggs of DuBois, Pa.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2009, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Rd., Millsboro, where friends and family may call after 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Long Neck U.M. Church, 32051 Long Neck Rd., Millsboro, DE 19966; the Delaware Heart Assoc., P.O. Box 15120, Chicago, IL 60693; or to a charity of the giver’s choice.
