A recent independent study of health care facilities gave very high marks to the three hospitals closest to this region — Beebe Medical Center, Atlantic General Hospital and Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC).
The report, provided by HealthGrades, concluded that Beebe ranks in the top 5 percent of all hospitals in the nation in orthopedic care. Beebe was the only hospital in all of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia to reveive five-star ratings for all orthopedic procedures measured by HealthGrades. The facility also received five-star ratings for the treatment of heart attack, pneumonia, stroke, gastrointestinal bleeding and sepsis.
PRMC was recognized for high-quality care in cardiac services, orthopaedics, stroke, pulmonary, prostatectomy, gastrointestinal care, critical care, general surgery and women’s health. PRMC was the only recipient of the 2009 HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence on the Delmarva Peninsula.
Atlantic General Hospital was also awarded for pulmonary care excellence, rounding out an impressive showing by our local hospitals.
The HealthGrades study covered a three-year period, and extensively assesses patient outcomes — considering mortality and complication rates, amongst other variables — at nearly all of the nation’s hospitals. It is considered the most comprehensive independent study of health care facilities in the nation.
This is outstanding news for our entire community. The ratings show the level of care being provided the people of this area, and should do a lot to build patient confidence in the services, facilities, doctors, nurses and staff of our hospitals.
In our own little slice of Delmarva, we now find ourselves within range of three highly-acclaimed medical facilities, meaning we should be able to go to any one of them to receive top-notch care without a second thought.
We congratulate all of those involved with Beebe, Atlantic General and PRMC, and thank them for their efforts in providing us the kind of medical care and treatment that we all deserve.
