Roger A. Scherff, 87, of Fenwick Island, Del., passed away Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at Atlantic General Hospital of Berlin, Md. He was a graduate of George Washington University. He worked at Ft. Detrick, Md. as a plant physiologist for 20 years before retiring. Upon retiring, he opened The Book and Card Center in Frederick, Md. He was the founder and president of The Maryland Pony Trotting Association. He was a member of NARFE, and served on the Board of Adjustments for Fenwick Island. He attended St. Ann Catholic Church in Bethany Beach and enjoyed model boat building, traveling and reading. Roger was also a strong supporter of animal and environmental causes.
Scherff was preceded in death by his parents, George and Florence (Morgan) Scherff. He is survived by his wife: Mary Riley Scherff of Fenwick Island; two daughters, Susan K. Scherff of Senecaville, OH and Alison Eidsmore and her husband Alan of Havre De Grace, Md.; three step-daughters, Betty Huntley and her husband John of Beaufort, S.C., Kathy Gibala of Bowie, Md. and Sharon Jawish and her husband William of Annapolis, Md.; one granddaughter, Ashley Eidsmore; five step-grandchildren; three step-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, Nov. 12, 11 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church in Bethany Beach with Father David Kelley officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
