Thomas R. Johnson, 84, of Lewes, Del., passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Del. He worked for Martin Aircraft after college and before he went into the service. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II; he served in the 42nd Photographic Recon Squadron from 1943-46. He enjoyed recounting stories of the esprit de corps and patriotism of the families that freely opened their doors for servicemen to share a meal and a roof over their heads that he experienced during the war years. After the service he did a seven-year apprenticeship with a certified printer and then went to work at Reese Press followed by a career as a printer at the U.S. Government Printing Office until his retirement in the early 80s. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Greenbelt and a member of the Holy Comforter R.C. Church in Towson. “Roddy” was a wonderful husband and father. He enjoyed being outdoors, avid golfer, fisherman, driving through the countryside, feeding the birds and squirrels, and he adored dogs and cats.
Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Albert C. and Helen Mahan Johnson; several siblings; and his wife of 50 years, Betty DeTurk Johnson. He is survived by a daughter Robin Thornberg and husband Mitchell of Dagsboro; a brother Louis Johnson of Pa.; a sister, Frances Horn of Branson, Mo.; very special family friends, Olga and Phil Fitch, John, Anna Mae, and Stacie Gullice, Dr. and Mrs. Hosmane and Family, Ralph and Lisa Bayko and Family; many nieces; nephews; and will be greatly missed by his Yorkie Frances Alyce.
Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, 2 p.m. at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S Washington Street, Millsboro, Del. where friends may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday from 1-2 p.m. Rev. Robert Hudson will officiate. Interment will be at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Dagsboro, DE. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for contribution to the Delaware SPCA, 22918 DuPony HWY, Georgetown, DE 19947 in memory of Thomas Johnson.
