Dr. Mervyn Lee Carey, 85


Dr. Mervyn Lee Carey, 85, of Bethany Beach, Del. passed away Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at Country Rest Home in Greenwood, Del. He was a member of the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1942 through 1946. As a member of the 2nd Marine Division, he fought in the Pacific battles of Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa, and was assigned to Nagasaki during the occupation. Carey graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1950, Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1954, and completed a residency in ob/gyn. He was in private practice in Baltimore from 1959 until June 1980, specializing in obstetrics. Moving to Delaware in 1980, he joined an existing group practice at Beebe Hospital in Lewes. Carey became an active member of the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company after retiring from medicine in 1984. He enjoyed surf fishing, wildfowl hunting, carving, and playing tennis.
Carey is survived by his wife of 63 years, Louise Otto Carey; two sons, Bodo Carey (Betsy) of Worcester, Vt., and Griff Carey (Jenny) of Hiram, Ga.; two daughters, Wendy Carey Pratt (Tony) of Lewes, Del., and Jane Carey Lyon (Greg) of Brooklyn, Conn.; and nine grandchildren.
As Dr. Carey wished, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company, P.O.
