Ralph E. Marvel, 80, of Dagsboro, Del., died Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at his home.
He had been a power plant operator for the DuPont Company in Seaford and retired after 27 years. He was a life member of the Millville Volunteer Fire Co., and was one of the original members of the fire department’s Scuba Dive Team. In 1972, he was selected as the fire department’s Fireman of the Year for rescuing two children who had fallen through the ice on a local pond and received a Letter of Commendation from the President of the Unite States for his heroic efforts. Marvel was also a member of the Delaware State Fireman’s Association Hall of Fame. In addition to being a scuba diver, he was an avid fisherman and hunter, and he also had his captain’s license and took divers on charter trips.
Marvel was preceded in death by his parents, Renzie and Ruth (Christ) Marvel. He is survived by his wife, Betty F. Marvel of Dagsboro; four sons, Emerson Marvel of Walnut Creek, Calif., Gary Marvel of Elizabethtown, Pa., Jeff Marvel of Dagsboro, Chad Marvel of Dagsboro; and one brother, Paul Marvel of Frankford, Del. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 18, with burial in St. George’s Cemetery in Clarksville, Del.
