Festival Hispano celebrates decade in Millsboro

El Centro Cultural is inviting the public to attend the 16th anniversary of Festival Hispano, in its 10th year in Millsboro. This year, the community event will be held on Sunday, Aug. 22. Festival Hispano will start at noon and last until 6 p.m. The event is free to the public and located at the Little League Complex on State Street in Millsboro.

El Centro Cultural began the event 16 years ago to highlight local talent and expose area residents to cultural and traditional music from Latin America. Festival Hispano is a day to experience music, dancing and food, and a cultural celebration for the many Hispanic immigrants who have come from many different countries to live and work in Sussex County.

Festival Hispano is made possible, in part, by grants from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency committed to promoting and supporting the arts in Delaware. The Delaware Division of the Arts provides technical and financial assistance to artists and arts programs and serves as a clearinghouse for information on the arts.

In addition to these grants, Festival Hispano is made possible, in large part, by the following sponsors: Atlantic Physical Therapy, Bayhealth Medical Center, Beebe Medical Center, Discover Bank, Perdue Farms and Sussex County Council.

El Centro Cultural is celebrating 10 years of Festival Hispano in the Town of Millsboro this year and will recognize the Town of Millsboro, the Millsboro Chamber of Commerce and the Millsboro Little League for their support and commitment to Festival Hispano.

This year’s program will feature local groups including a marimba band, a mariachi singer, traditional Mexican dances, traditional Flamenco dances, music from the Andes and a Puerto Rican dance group. El Centro Cultural aims to find new local groups and promote the groups at Festival Hispano and local community events throughout the year.

Display tables with community information in Spanish and local businesses that offer products and services to the Hispanic community will be on the main field.

Festival Hispano will have a designated children’s area, coordinated by the Maranatha Church of God of Seaford, with information and activities for the whole family. The children’s area will again have a moon bounce, piñatas, games and information tables about social service agencies in the Sussex County that target Hispanic families.

Food vendors will be offering tacos, pupusas and aguas frescas.

Festival Hispano is one of the many activities sponsored by the local arts organization known as El Centro Cultural. Formed in 1995 to provide more artistic, cultural and social programs, El Centro Cultural plays a role in discovering and promoting local Hispanic artists, supporting local arts education and coordinating local community events.

Those who would like to participate in Festival Hispano to promote a business, inform the community of services and reach thousands of Hispanic residents can visit Web site www.elcentrocultural.org for applications, pictures and more information, or contact organizers by e-mail at festivalhispano@hotmail.com or by phone at (302) 745-6828.
