James Sherry Nist, 76, of Bethany Beach, Del., passed away on Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010. After graduation from the College of Holy Cross, Nist served in the United States Marines. He retired to Bethany Beach after a career with IBM. He had a famous sense of humor and was a horrible singer. He was a longtime devotee of the VW convertible. He possessed a powerful ping-pong game, was a deadly underhand free-throw shooter and became a late, but enthusiastic, convert to yoga. He loved to build and fix things – particularly where a router could be employed.
In addition to being a devoted friend and a loving husband and father, Nist spent countless hours as a counselor and true friend to strangers in the darkest hours of their lives. Through his own triumphs and tragedies, he worked hard to be a better person and share what he learned through the program of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Nist is survived by his wife, Margy Nist of Bethany Beach; and his children James, John, Sherry, Amy, Paul and David Nist, and Megan Weigel Barrett. He also leaves behind grandchildren Josephine and Camille Rong, Phoenyx Nist-Ferrare, Claire Lyons, and Nicholas and Marlie Nist; his sister Betty Harig and his brother Dr. Robert Nist. “His Amazing Grace will live on in all of us. His cats, Wink and Swami, like everyone whose life he touched, will miss him dearly.”
A Mass of Christian Burial was scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010. Memorial contributions can be sent to Delaware Hospice; 100 Patriot’s Way; Milford, DE 19963.
