WEATHER ALERT: Winter storm could bring 5-8 inches of snow, hazardous driving conditions


A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 2 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 10 AM EST WEDNESDAY...  A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 2 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 10 AM EST WEDNESDAY.  SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: 5 TO 8 INCHES. 

SNOW IS EXPECTED TO OVERSPREAD THE AREA FROM SOUTHWEST TO NORTHEAST LATER THIS AFTERNOON AND CONTINUE TONIGHT BEFORE TAPERING OFF TO SNOW SHOWERS OR FLURRIES WEDNESDAY MORNING. THE SNOW WILL BECOME STEADIER AND HEAVIER DURING TONIGHT.

SNOW WILL STICK TO UNTREATED ROADWAYS. SNOWFALL RATES CAN CAUSE THE VISIBILITY TO DROP TO ONE-HALF MILE FOR A PERIOD OF TIME, WITH THE HEAVIEST SNOW OCCURRING OVERNIGHT. DRIVING WILL BECOME HAZARDOUS. THIS EVENINGS COMMUTE COULD BECOME SLIPPERY, HOWEVER THE WEDNESDAY MORNING COMMUTE COULD BE RATHER HAZARDOUS.

WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE FROM THE NORTHWEST AND TURN GUSTY AFTER THE SNOWFALL, WITH AREAS OF BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW OCCURING.

A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE EXPECTED. THIS WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE. IF YOU NEED TO TRAVEL, USE EXTRA CAUTION ESPECIALLY ON SIDE ROADS AND WHILE CROSSING BRIDGES AND OTHER ELEVATED SURFACES. REMEMBER, BRIDGES TEND TO ICE UP BEFORE THE ROADWAY DOES.

Meeting, event postponed

The Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission meeting set for Jan. 13 has been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb. 24.

The planned showing of the Dewey Beach-based film "Mayor Cupcake" at the Clayton Theater in Dagsboro has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m., due to the weather. Tickets for the Jan. 11 show will be honored.
