The Walt Jones Memorial Project will offer an indoor Winter Golf Clinic on Saturday, Feb. 1, to benefit Sussex County Habitat for Humanity. Sessions will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. and from noon to 2 p.m. at Delmarva Christian High School in Georgetown.
Expanding on last year’s sold out event, this year organizers have arranged for six local pros to teach rotating groups of six or seven golfers. Attendance is limited to 40 players in the morning and afternoon. Sessions will focus on pitching, putting and driving, with a special breakout session for younger players, ages 8 to 18.
The clinic sessions are open to beginners, semi-pros, men, women and youth.
A raffle will also be held, with prizes from several local pro-shops and golf clubs. Golf wear and equipment from Ruddo’s Golf, as well as other local pro-shops, will also be on display.
To register online, go to www.waltjonesmemorialproject.com or call the Habitat office at (302) 855-1153, ext. 208, and speak with Jacquie Sanders.
Walt Jones was the owner and operator of both the Old Landing Golf Course until 1979 and Midway Par 3 course prior to his passing in 2010. Jones had donated use of the Midway Par 3 golf course for Habitat’s outing since its inception, and his family has offered to continue his legacy of giving. His grandson Shaun Jones founded the Walt Jones Memorial Golf Outing in 2005, with the intention of raising enough money to sponsor an entire Habitat home.
Shaun Jones single-handedly organized the first three golf outings and pre-tournament mixers and mini-auctions. Building on his success, the events have evolved into a yearlong series of community fundraising efforts organized and supported by a group of dedicated volunteers committed to supporting their local community.
Last year, more than $67,000 was raised to sponsor a Habitat home, dedicated in memory of Walt Jones, for Brandy Williams and her family, in Georgetown Point.
A second annual Spring Wine Tasting will be held at Bin 66 on Sunday, April 6. The Live and Silent Auction will be held at Bethany Blues on Monday, May 12. The ninth annual Walt Jones Memorial Golf Outing will be held at Midway Par 3 on Friday, May 16.
