Bethany Beach Books will be hosting award-winning local author J. Boyce Gleason for an author signing event at 7 p.m. on June 30, at their store on Garfield Parkway in Bethany Beach.
Gleason, who has owned a home in Bethany Beach for more than 30 years, recently won a gold medal from the Independent Publishers Awards for “Best Historical Fiction Novel of 2014.” His debut novel, “Anvil of God: Book One of the Carolingian Chronicles” is also a finalist in the ForeWord Reviews “Book of the Year” Awards.
“I’m really excited to be at Bethany Beach Books as an author,” Gleason said. “I’ve been a customer of the store as long as I can remember, and I’ve always dreamed of doing a signing there. It’s a great place, with a wonderful mix of books from up-and-coming authors to bestsellers, and they have a deep section of classics. It’s really an anchor for the town.”
“Anvil of God” is based on a true story about the power struggle that fractures the family of Charles the Hammer in the wake of his death in 741. It is the first in a series of books about the rise of the Carolingian kings.
“It’s a fascinating story and a pivotal time in history,” said Gleason. “Brother battles brother, Christianity battles paganism, and Charles’ daughter flees his court in the dark of the night to find love amongst his enemies. Anvil is the kind of sweeping historical novel that has everything you’d want in a summer read.”
Before becoming an author, Gleason was an award-winning public affairs and crisis management consultant in Washington, D.C. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College, with a degree in history. He said he likes to say that he knows what happened in history and writes historical fiction to discover why. He is married to his wife, Mary Margaret, and they have three children.
