Veteran teaching pro and accomplished junior and collegiate player Jeff Ryman has joined Sea Colony Tennis as the Bethany Beach-area program’s new head tennis professional.
“Jeff brings a diverse tennis experience to the Sea Colony,” said Sea Colony Tennis Director Thomas Johnston. “He is a great addition to the team and brings a track record of excellence in teaching, developing and enhancing programs, specifically juniors.”
A native of Woodstock, Va., Ryman comes to Sea Colony with more than 10 years of teaching experience and is a United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) Elite Tennis Professional.
An accomplished junior player, Ryman started playing tennis at 9, along with his older brother, who is also a tennis professional. He competed in United States Tennis Association (USTA) junior tournaments, winning a Virginia state championship in 1999. His high school squad won the state title his freshman year and finished runner-up his senior year.
Ryman played his collegiate tennis at Christopher Newport University and Methodist University, where he was part of a USA South Conference Championship team. He graduated from Methodist with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, with a concentration in professional tennis management.
Upon graduating, Ryman started his career as a tennis professional, working as head professional at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia and head professional at Macgregor Downs Country Club in North Carolina, where he managed the junior tennis program and a slate of USTA League teams. He most recently worked at Roanoke Country Club in Virginia.
“Anyone in the tennis industry knows Sea Colony and how well-respected its facilities and programs are,” said Ryman, who is in the process of moving to the beach, along with his wife, Kelly, and son, Jake. “It’s world-class and certainly one of the best in the country. It was impossible to say no.”
Located at the crossroads of Kent Avenue and West Way Drive, just south of Bethany Beach, Sea Colony’s tennis center features six indoor, 14 Har-Tru clay and 14 hard-surface courts, a full-service pro shop, and facilities and top-notch instruction for all ages and skill levels — homeowners, guests and the tennis-playing public on the Delaware and Maryland coast — every day of the year.
The public is welcome to participate in the club’s daily adult and junior tennis clinics, weekend and mid-week camps and private lessons. Individual and family memberships are also available.
Sea Colony has recently earned local, national and global tennis honors. In May 2015, Tennis Resorts Online’s annual Top 100 camps and resorts reader poll named Sea Colony the No. 9 tennis camp in the world and No. 5 for junior programs, as well as a Top 50 resort. In 2012, the facility was named an Outstanding Facility of the Year by the USTA. Also in that year, Tennis magazine listed Sea Colony as one of its Top 50 American Resorts, including No. 3 in the Mid-Atlantic.
