Race for the Ribbon 5K Run/Walk set for July 16

The Race for the Ribbon 5K Run/Walk will return to Rehoboth Beach for the ninth year on Saturday, July 16, benefitting Relay for Life of Coastal Delaware.

The race begins at 7:30 a.m. and will go on rain or shine, with live music and an awards ceremony scheduled afterwards, to go along with a silent auction and free breakfast buffet compliments of the Greene Turtle.

Pre-registration is open through Thursday, July 14, and costs a discounted $22, with race-day registration starting at 6 a.m. at Wilmington Avenue and the boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach. Race-day registration costs $25.

Ocean Bowl Bash rescheduled after washout

After being rained out on Tuesday, June 28, the Ocean Bowl Bash at Ocean Bowl Skate Park in Ocean City, Md., has been rescheduled for Thursday, July 14.

The free event will include music, food, contests and more, and span from 3 to 6 p.m.

Shorebirds’ Alvarado named SAL Pitcher of the Week

Delmarva pitcher Cristian Alvarado is the fourth Shorebirds’ player to receive SAL Player of the Week honors this season, after earning the selection for the week of Monday, June 27, to Sunday, July 3.

Alvarado made just one start during the week’s span but impressed in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Wednesday, June 29, by tying a career-high seven innings pitched.

In that appearance, Alvarado allowed only one hit and walked one batter, while striking out eight.

So far this season, the 21-year-old Baltimore Orioles prospect from Acarigua, Venezuela, has made 16 starts and leads the team leads in wins with seven while holding a 3.19 ERA. He also leads the South Atlantic League with a total 101 strikeouts in 87.1 innings pitched.

Other players to collect SAL honors in 2016 include catcher Yermin Mercedes (two nods) and short stop Ryan Mountcastle.

IR’s Smith earns win for Aces in second straight complete game

Rising Indian River High School junior and current Delmarva Aces RHP Mark Smith tossed his second straight complete game pitching for the Delmarva Aces on Sunday, July 3, in a six-hit win over MA Redsox.

Currently, Smith has not allowed an earned run in his last 16 innings’ pitched.

Other IR players playing for the 16U Mizuno Aces this summer include: pitcher Pryce Jones, pitcher Myles Clark and P/OF Zion Howard.
