Shorebirds’ Mercedes named SAL Player of the Month, promoted to Keys

Recently promoted to the Class A-Advanced Frederick Keys in the Carolina League, former Delmarva Shorebirds’ catcher Yermin Mercedes was also named the South Atlantic League Player of the Month for the month of July.

During the month, Mercedes maintained a .375 batting average during a 26-game stretch, racking up 12 doubles, four homeruns and 14 RBIs in the process.

His standout performance came on Tuesday, July 26, against the Kannapolis Intimidators, when he went 4-4 on the night, with three solo homeruns and a single, becoming the first Shorebirds’ player to hit three homeruns in a single game since at least 2007, according to the club.

He leaves the team with the South Atlantic League’s highest active batting average (.353), best slugging percentage (.579), second-highest on-base percentage (.411), and fourth in the league in homeruns, with 14.
