Ansboury to appear at Sports at the Beach for pickle ball clinic

As part of the 25th Anniversary of the Delaware Senior Olympics, current national women’s pickleball champion Sarah Ansboury will be making her way to Sussex County for instructional clinics.

The clinics will be held at the new indoor facility at Sports on the Beach in Georgetown, on Friday, Sept. 30, and on Saturday, Oct. 1, and Sunday, Oct. 2.

As part of the celebration, pickleball players will also have the chance to win a new Pro-Lite Rebel Powerspin autographed by Ansboury. Anyone who registers for the clinic or completes Vaughn “The Baron” Baker’s pickleball quiz on www.pickleballcoast.com will be eligible to win.

87ers to hold open tryout Sept. 17

The Delaware 87ers of the NBA Developmental League have announced that the team will host an open tryout in Hockenssin on Saturday, Sept. 17. The session will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the Hockenssin PAL Center, located at 7259 Lancaster Pike in Hockenssin.

Players in attendance will be evaluated by Delaware 87ers and Philadelphia 76ers basketball operations staff for a chance to be invited to training camp. Online registration is open through Sept. 16, at www.sevens.com/tryouts.

Shorebirds gear up for final homestand, Fan Appreciation Weekend

With the 2016 season winding down, the coming week is the last chance for fans to catch the Delmarva Shorebirds in action.

The Baltimore Orioles’ Class-A affiliate was riding a five-game win streak as of Coastal Point press time on Wednesday, Aug. 31, headed into their final four games of the season, at home against Kannapolis.

Delmarva will host the Intimidators at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md., from Friday, Sept. 2, through Monday, Sept. 5. Friday’s and Saturday’s games are set for 7:05 p.m., with Sunday’s game set for a 5:05 p.m. start and Monday’s finale for 2:05 p.m.

Promotions during “Fan Appreciation Weekend” include a Shorebirds’ doormat giveaway on Friday for the first 1,000 fans and Kids Run the Bases on Sunday.

“G-Money” to throw out first pitch at Shorebirds game

Garrett “G-Money” Rogers will throw out the first pitch during the Delmarva Shorebirds’ matchup against the Kannapolis Intimidators on Sunday, Sept. 4.

The 10-year-old Millsboro Little Leaguer was struck by a van while retrieving a baseball in May and was recently released from the hospital and allowed to return home with his family.

The Shorebirds honored Rogers earlier this season, posting a photo with a jersey with Rogers’ No. 22 on it, in Shorebirds’ orange and black, with the message: “The Shorebirds are sending their thoughts toward local Little Leaguer Garrett Rogers. Get well soon, buddy! #gmoneystrong #22 #prayersfor22.”

58th Annual Labor Day White Marlin Tournament canceled

The Ocean City Marlin Club Fishing Committee has announced that the 58th Annual Labor Day White Marlin Tournament set for Labor Day Weekend has been canceled due the weekend’s weather forecast.

The tournament was supposed to run from Thursday, Sept. 1, through Sunday, Sept. 4.
