Moore rushes for 55, Salisbury shuts out Southern Va.
The Salisbury University football team moved to 3-0 on Saturday, Sept. 24, with a 35-0 conference win over Southern Virginia.
Indian River High School graduate Aaron Moore, running back for the Indians’ 2011 state championship team, rushed for 55 yards on three carries in the matchup, for an 18.3-yard average. Moore’s long on the day was a 36-yard run.
The Seagulls are now 2-0 in the Empire 8 Athletic Conference and were gearing up this week for their matchup against TCNJ on Saturday, Oct. 1. That game will be Homecoming/Family Weekend for the Seagulls and begins at 1 p.m.
Saturday’s shutout was Salisbury’s first since 2013.
Links to the Bay 5K set for Oct. 8 at Bayside
The second annual Links to the Bay 5K will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, at The Point at the Bayside Resort Golf Club in West Fenwick. The race will feature the scenic views of the Ocean City, Md., skyline and will both start and finish at The Point pier and water-sports area.
The event will benefit the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, and also features a breakfast buffet with Bloody Mary bar, wildlife demonstration, live music, activities for kids, awards ceremony and after-party.
Race fees cost $35 and include a race T-shirt, in addition to the race’s other offerings.

Guzman-Check tallies two assists in Wesley loss to Frostburg State
Indian River High School graduate and current Wesley College midfielder Aline Guzman-Check continues to rack up assists in her freshman campaign, setting up both of the Wolverines’ scores in a 4-2 loss to Frostburg State on Saturday, Sept. 24.
Both goals were finished by Wesley sophomore midfielder Janiah Moore (Caesar Rodney), the first putting the Wolverines up 1-0 in the 35th minute, when Guzman-Check broke down the Bobcat defense and sent Moore a through ball that she buried for the score.
Then, down 2-1 in the second half, she found Moore again, to tie the game at 2-2. The Bobcats managed the go-ahead goal in the 69th minute, and stretched their lead to 4-2 on a late game PK.
Check-Guzman now has five assists on the season.
Up next, the Wolverines will look to rebound against Christopher Newport at home on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. They’re currently 4-3-1 on the season, and 0-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.
Sussex Central 29, Queen Anne’s County 14 (football)
The Sussex Central High School football team got back on track with a 29-14 win over Maryland’s Queen Anne’s County High School on Friday, Sept. 23, to improve to 2-1 on the season.
The Golden Knights were led by senior running back Kendrique Nocks, who rushed for two scores in the matchup, one of them an 80-yard run to put Central on top 7-0 in the first quarter.
Senior quarterback Brady Bowden made it 14-0 after that, when he found senior Mark Tolson for a 70-yard air strike. Senior running back Tim Jones also rushed for a touchdown in the matchup.
The Golden Knights will host Sussex Tech (2-1) in a Henlopen North showdown on Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. Both teams are currently 2-1 overall and 0-0 in the division.
Sussex Central 3, Sussex Tech 2 (boys’ soccer)
Coming off their first win over Caesar Rodney since before 2009, the Sussex Central high school boys’ soccer team snapped another streak with a 3-2 win over Sussex Tech that went to overtime on Thursday, Sept. 22.
Central took a 1-0 lead into the break by way of an unassisted goal by senior Dalendy Dupervil, with Tech junior forward Joshua Artiga netting the equalizer early in the second half.
The Ravens took the lead on a goal from freshman forward Patrick Short in the 61st minute, but junior Christopher Ramirez answered right back to tie it at 2-2 just over 10 minutes later.
Ramirez found the net for the second time with the game-deciding goal in overtime to give Central their first win over Tech since 2011.
Central sophomore keeper Watson Dorsinvil tallied seven saves in the matchup, and Tech senior goalie Anthony Hitchcock finished with five.
The Golden Knights moved to 3-0 on the season with the win, while the Ravens fell to 1-3.
