Cape Henlopen 17, Sussex Academy 45 (boys’ cross-country)
The Cape Henlopen boys’ cross-country team started the season 1-0 with a 17-45 win over Sussex Academy on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
Sophomore Greg Boyce, sophomore Sam Nye and senior Ryan Shaffer earned the top three spots for the Vikings, while senior Mason Hayes led the Seahawks with a fourth-place finish.
Sussex Academy freshman Johnathan Kent was edged out of the top 10 with a time of 21:08, just 9 seconds behind Cape sophomore Collin Thompson.
The Seahawks were 2-3 on the season this week, gearing up for a home tri-meet against Delmarva Christian High School and First State Military Academy on Thursday, Sept. 29, after Coastal Point press time.
Sussex Academy 25, Cape Henlopen 32 (girls’ cross-country)
It was history in the making for the Sussex Academy girls’ cross-country team on Wednesday, Sept. 21, with the Seahawks taking down Cape Henlopen for the first time ever.
Sussex Academy freshman Helena Helou led her squad with a second-place finish, just 3 seconds behind Cape freshman Olivia Brozefsky in a race that went down to the wire.
Freshman Lindsey Guida took third place for the Seahawks, and sophomore Aliyah Patel, sophomore Leah Marsh, freshman Eleanor Harrison and sophomore Kathryn Van Pelt all finished in the top 10.
The win put the girls at 4-1 headed into a tri-meet on Thursday, Sept. 29, (after Coastal Point press time) when they were set to host Delmarva Christian High School and First State Military Academy at 4 p.m.
