Hair of the Dog/Exercise Like the Eskimos set for New Years’ Day
The sixth annual Hair of the Dog 5K/10K and 21st Annual Leo Brady Exercise Like the Eskimos Plunge will return to Bethany Beach this New Years’ Day, with online registration open through Dec. 27.
The event that benefits the Quiet Resorts Charitable Foundation (QRCF) will get under way on Sunday, Jan. 1, at 8:45 a.m. with events spread throughout the day in downtown Bethany Beach and capped with the plunge into the Atlantic in front of the Bethany Beach bandstand at noon.
Age-group awards will be given out for the 5K and 10K, with a post-race party held at Mango’s featuring live music from D.J. Padraig and complimentary beer provided by Shock Top and Michelob Ultra.
Day-of registration opens on Sunday, Jan. 1, at 7:30 a.m. at the Bethany Beach bandstand. To register online, or for more information, visit www.qrcf.org.
IR boys’ hoops suffers first loss, starts 5-1
After a 5-0 start to the season, including division wins over Seaford and Delmar, the Indian River High School boys’ basketball team fell to Woodbridge 81-60 on Tuesday, Dec. 13, in their first loss of the season.
Freshman guard Kevin “K.J.” Custis led the Indians with 16 points in that game, with sophomore guard Jamier Felton putting up 14, senior forward Isaiah “Izzy” Bratton finishing with 13, sophomore Patrick Mumford with six and senior guard Colby Chandler adding five.
The Indians won’t return to the court until after winter break, when they head to Milford for another Henlopen South matchup on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
McCoy, Yellow Jackets take first in relays during loss to York
While the Randolph-Macon women’s swimming team may have taken a 123-83 loss to York College on Saturday, Dec. 10, Indian River High School graduate Lauren McCoy helped lead her squad to a first-place finish in the 400-Medley Relay at the meet.
Teaming up with Laney Sanchez, Haylie Moore and Kacey Poole, the RMC freshman led the way to a first-place finish and time of 4:20.51.
Then, in the 200-Freestyle Relay, McCoy teamed up with Poole, Kata Kylliainen and Megan Granger for another first-place finish and time of 1:43.69.
Individually, McCoy took fourth in the 200-Backstroke with a time of 2:25.9.
Up next, the Yellow Jackets will look to rebound when they head to Howard University on Friday, Jan. 13, after winter break.
Postlewait 33, Selbyville 22 (girls’ hoops)
Coming off a 22-8 win over Sussex Academy on Monday, Dec. 5, the Selbyville Middle School girls’ basketball team fell to 1-1 on the season with a 33-22 loss to Postlewait Middle School on Wednesday, Dec. 7.
Selbyville eighth-grader Rachel Ehlers led the Indians in scoring with a double-double in that game, posting 13 points and pulling down 13 rebounds while also managed one steal.
Savannah O’Shields finished with four points, three rebounds and an assist; Brandi Mitchell had two points, six rebounds and an assist; and Le’Anya Garrison ended the night with two points and three rebounds.
Up next, the Indians are scheduled to head to Dover Central Middle School on Monday, Dec. 19.
