Hugh James “Jim” McGinnis III, 72, of Dagsboro, Del., passed away on Dec. 3, 2016, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Del. He was born on Jan. 5, 1944, in Wilmington, Del., to the late Hugh James McGinnis Sr. and Katherine Sullivan McGinnis.
McGinnis grew up to serve in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam War veteran. He earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the University of Delaware.
McGinnis married Cynthia Marie Riner and was a dedicated husband and father to their two children. He loved baseball, fishing, opera and history (he was an amateur scholar of sorts). McGinnis will be remembered as always being able to express himself in a friendly, charming, soft-spoken manner. He was devoted to his family and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, McGinnis was preceded by his wife of 25 years, Cynthia; his brother, Michael; and his parents-in-law, Gordon and Marian Riner. He is survived by his two children, Matthew McGinnis of Dagsboro and Maggie McGinnis of Ocean View, Del.; two sisters, Maggie and Kathy; two brothers, Patrick and Kevin; his sisters-in-law, Debby and Robyn; his brother-in-law, Jack; and his many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and celebration of life were scheduled for Dec. 8, 2016, at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, Del., with the Rev. Earl Baker officiating.
