Thomas J. Parsons Sr., 81, of Selbyville, Del., formerly of Mantua, N.J., passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2016, at his home. He was born in Kingston, Pa., on Nov. 6, 1935.
Parsons proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1960. During his time in the Navy, he learned his trade of being an electrician. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Parsons worked as an electrician for several companies, including Sun Ship in Chester, Pa., Campbell Soup in Camden, N.J., Del Monte in Swedesboro, N.J., and Ekco in Clayton, N.J. He moved to Selbyville in 1991 and worked for Gerone Hudson Electrical Contractors in Frankford, Del., for more than a decade before completely retiring in 2013.
Parsons enjoyed going to the Cheer Center in Ocean View, Del., where he played poker twice a week. He also spent his free time woodworking, making furniture, dollhouses and whirligigs.
Parsons was preceded in death by his son, Benjamin Parsons, who was 18. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Jane (Roper) Parsons; two daughters, Lisa Williams and her husband, David, of Bear, Del., and Susan Parsons of New Castle, Del.; a son, Thomas J. Parsons Jr.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services and burial were to be private.
