Delle Donne traded to Mystics, headed to D.C.

WNBA superstar and University of Delaware graduate Elena Delle Donne will make her way back to the East Coast after being traded by the Chicago Sky to the Washington Mystics last week.

The Mystics receive the 2015 WNBA MVP after trading Stephanie Dobson, Kahleah Cooper and the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft. Delle Donne reportedly requested the trade in order to be able to be closer to home and her family.

During her NCAA career, the Ursuline Academy grad transferred to U.D. after being recruited to play basketball at the University of Connecticut.

Delle Donne will make her D.C. debut on Sunday, May 14, when the Mystics tip off against the San Antonio Stars at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.

IR wrestling 12-1 after wins over Delmar, Seaford

The Indian River High School wrestling team continued to rack up the wins last week, improving to 12-1 on the season with an 83-0 victory over Seaford and taking down Delmar 65-12 during a tri-meet held at Delmar on Wednesday, Feb. 1.

At press time on Wednesday, Feb. 7, the Indians still had two regular-season dual meets left to go, heading into the Feb. 7 match at Sussex Central and Senior Night match hosting Woodbridge on Friday, Feb. 9, at 6:30 p.m.

Slated for a top seed for the state championship tournament, and with individual state and conference tournaments still to go, both senior Zeke Marcozzi and Jared Arlett will continue to look for a place in the school’s record books, with Marcozzi positioned four wins shy of setting a new Indian River High School record for career wins (128) and Arlett just 11 wins shy of reaching 100 on his career.

Shorebirds add new seats, online ticket plan purchasing

With the 2017 baseball season approaching, the Delmarva Shorebirds are making some upgrades at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md., and beyond.

The Baltimore Orioles Class-A affiliate is currently in the process of renovating its stadium seating, doing away with bench seats and instead is installing 4,500 plastic bucket seats. The organization is also replacing lower-level “box seats” with 674 padded seats with cushions and cup holders.

Also new this spring will be the addition of an LED video board that is three times the size of the team’s previous video board, and the ability to purchase ticket plans online at www.theshorebirds.com.

“With the way technology is trending in today’s society, we wanted to allow Shorebirds fans to have the opportunity to purchase ticket plans from the comfort of their own home, 24/7,” explained General Manager Chris Bitters.

The upgrades are scheduled to be completed in time for opening day on Thursday, April 13, against the Hagerstown Suns.
