Phyllis “Dolly” Browning, 84, died in the loving company of family in Leesburg, Va., on April 25, 2017. She was born on Oct. 3, 1932, in Ephrata, Pa., to Morse Brossman Sr. and Alzenia Brossman.
At age 16, Browning was stricken with tubercular meningitis, spending six months in a coma. Doctors said she would not be able to walk or have children. She proved them wrong on both counts. In 1951, Browning received a scholarship to study nursing at West Reading Hospital. She began corresponding through the mail with a young soldier from Pittsburgh, Pa., who had only seen a picture of her. The couple recently celebrated 64 years of marriage.
Browning was an active member of her community, serving in the Roxana Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary and hosting numerous fundraising events. She was an accomplished square-dancer who, with her husband, danced in all 50 states around the country.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph E. Browning Jr.; four daughters, Donna Browning Hensley, Sandee Strong, Renee Haver and Valerie Preletz; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 13, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 605 W. Market Street, Leesburg, Va., with a reception immediately following at the Preletz household. The family requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Roxana Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary; 35943 Zion Church Rd.; Frankford, DE 19945.
