Charles Edward Graves, 89

Charles Edward Graves, 89, of Millsboro, Del., and formerly of Wilmington, Del., and Florida, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Friday, May 5, 2017. He was born in Ashland, Del., on Feb. 3, 1928, to the late Lemuel and Viola Edler Graves.

Graves retired from Hercules Research Center as grounds foreman in 1983 after 30 years of service. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Graves was a member of Bethany Community Church in Laurel, Del., and a past member of the Elsmere Fire Company in Elsmere, Del., as well as of the Masons and Lions Club, and Master of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. He enjoyed model trains, cooking, fishing, boating, camping and spending time with his family. The boy left the farm, but the farming never left him; he enjoyed riding on his John Deere tractor, cutting his grass. He also liked solving the world’s problems with his good friend Jack from Buffalo, N.Y.

In addition to his parents, Graves was also preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Marion C. Graves, on Jan. 16, 2017, as well as five siblings. Graves is survived by two sisters, Mildred Beeson of Smyrna, Del., and Betty Graves of Magnolia, Del.; his five children, Sandra L. Graves of Millsboro, Janice M. Vickers and her husband, William H. Vickers III, of Millsboro, Charles L. Graves and his wife, Beverly, of Georgetown, Del., Marion “Patty” Graves and her partner, John Woznicki, of Wilmington, and Deborah A. Hoover and her husband, Robert T. Hoover Jr., of Wilmington, Del.; 10 grandchildren, Billy, Tina, Kate, Lenny, Kirtis, John, Michael, Jesse, Bobby and Amber; 18 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandchild on the way; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2017, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington Street, Millsboro, Del., where friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for visitation with the family. Interment with military honors will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
