Frederick James “Fred” Downs, 57, of Lewes, Del., passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 4, 2017. He was born Sept. 28, 1959, in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Frederick James Downs and Nancy Pinto Downs.
Downs was a Villanova University graduate and worked at Handy & Harman Company in Camden, Del., as a human resources director. He was a member of the Wandendale Hunt Club, Ducks Unlimited and Elks Lodge 2540. Downs was a leader and very active in Troop 2540 Boy Scouts of America for many years and mentored countless youths during that time. He enjoyed hunting, boating and spending time with family and friends.
Downs was a loving father and brother and is survived by a son, Lee A. Downs, and daughter, Alexandra M. Downs, both of Lewes; as well as his former wife, Tina Ballas Downs; mother-in-law, Joan Brohawn; and two sisters, Margueritte Downs Mertz and her husband, John, and Nancy A. Crass and her husband, Keith.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 12, 2017, at 11 a.m. at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, Del., where friends may visit one hour prior. Friends may also visit on Thursday evening, May 11, 2017, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes. Interment was to be private.
