Bertha Van Vlierden Lasher, 90, passed away peacefully, in Lutz, Fla., on May 5, 2017, surrounded by her daughters, after a full and fruitful life. She was born in Saugerties, N.Y., to the late Leroy and Helen Luhrs Van Vlierden.
Except for her early years in Saugerties and her later years in Lutz, she lived her entire adult life in Millsboro, Del. She spent her life in service to her family and her community, the environment and the world.
In addition to her parents, Lasher was preceded in death by her husband, Hiram Nelson Lasher, in 2012; a son, Steven Hiram Lasher, in 1979; and two sisters, Margaret “Peg” V. Swartz in 2001 and Marie V. Martin in 2015. She is survived by a twin sister, Betty V. Decker, still in Saugerties; six children, Douglas Nelson and his wife, Carolyn Lasher, of Decatur, Ala., Sandra L. and her husband, William Gordon, of Big Pine Key, Fla., Hiram Dennis Lasher of Millsboro, Del., Denise Helen Lasher and her husband, Sigmund Paczkowski, of Lutz, Fla., Michael Clark Lasher of Millsboro and Michele Betty Lasher of Dagsboro, Del.; six grandchildren, Sean David and Lisa Lasher of Georgetown, Elizabeth Lasher Wehnes of Lutz and Sarah Elizabeth Lasher of Milford, Del.; and a great-grandchild, Hiram Sean Lasher of Georgetown, Del.
Her friends were invited to join the family for a graveside service on Monday, June 12, 2017, at 3 p.m. at Millsboro (Del.) Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Del-Mar-Va Council, Boy Scouts of America; Henson Scout Reservation; 5700 Nanticoke Rd.; Rhodesdale, Md., 19973, earmarked for the Lasher Activities Building.
