Claudia Sien McClenny, 73, of Bethany Beach, Del., passed away and went to be with her Lord on June 2, 2017, following a struggle with cancer.
As the beloved wife of the late Anthony “Tony” Burnell McClenny Sr., the mayor of Bethany Beach from 2008 to 2014, Claudia McClenny was adored by many of the residents for the many ways she served in her community. She was a familiar and friendly face to many locals and those with the tradition of vacationing in Bethany.
McClenny served in the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, including a term as president. She volunteered with the election polls, local library, Bethany Beach Christian Church camp and Beach & Bay Cottage Tour. She also invested her time in mentoring a local child. Those who did not know her by name knew her face or of her contributions to the community and its visitors.
Born July 21, 1943, in Washington, D.C., she met her husband-to-be, Tony McClenny, at church when they were both 19, eloping with him in 1963 to begin a marriage of 51 years. They had three children of their own and fostered numerous others.
She worked at Systems Wireless Limited from 1980 to 2000, taking on many tasks and wearing many hats before settling in to the titles of head of human resources and head of accounts receivable. She enjoyed time with her family, traveling and taking pride in her abilities to make a positive impact on those around her. McClenny had a strong faith in God, an open heart and a beautiful outlook on life that was contagious.
McClenny was preceded in death by her father and mother, Kenneth and Neva Sien; a sister, Betty Dement; and a son, Kevin “Trip” McClenny. She is survived by her son Bernie and his wife, Becky McClenny; daughter, Kristina, and her husband, Dan Furey; four grandchildren, Christa and Kyle McClenny, and Timothy and Lucas Furey; and four brothers, Don, Bill, Kenny and Danny Sien.
