Walter E. Lathbury, 75, of Ocean View, Del., passed away peacefully on Friday, July 7, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born Oct. 2, 1941, son of the late Ernest Lathbury and Alice (Bennett) Lathbury.
Lathbury grew up in Ocean View, attending Lord Baltimore School. When he graduated, Lathbury went to work as a mariner and started his career on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry. Over the years, he traveled all over the world working for Global Marine as chief engineer on oil rigs.
He would provide great entertainment in telling the history and stories of growing up in Ocean View and Bethany Beach, Del., along with his work experiences traveling around the world. He loved the Eagles and the Nationals, and if the game was on, he could be found in front of the TV.
Lathbury was a lifelong member of Mariner’s Bethel United Methodist Church. He participated in many ministries of the church, including disciple classes, Sunday school, Top Gun, Bible studies, Purpose Driven Life, Romeos, Celebrate Recovery, ALFA and Emmaus. He had a wonderful knowledge and love of God, in which he was a great evangelist for both the church and AA program. He was proud to be “A Friend of Bill” for 24 years. He was always there to help where needed and will be truly missed.
Lathbury is survived by his wife, Nancy Lathbury; his brother, Frank Lathbury, and his wife, Lois; a son, Gregory Lathbury and his wife, Justine, of Salisbury, Md.; a daughter, Donna Ardizzone and her husband, Phil, of Silver Spring, Md.; a stepdaughter, Kassie Warrington and her husband, Mike, of Selbyville, Del.; a stepson, Patrick Slavin and his wife, Terri, of Venetia, Pa.; and six grandchildren, Chase Wells, Tristan and Jillian Lathbury, Kaden and Cooper Slavin and Carson Ardizzone. He was very proud of his family.
